Rare earth elements (REE) are 17 elements consisting of 15 lanthanides, yttrium and scandium, which have similar properties in terms of chemical, magnetic and optical properties.

The elements that make up rare earth elements are divided into heavy (Y, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb and Lu) and light (Sc, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Pm and Sm) rare earth elements. are grouped. This grouping is made according to the atomic numbers of the elements and their frequency of occurrence in nature. Light rare earth elements are found more frequently in nature. The adjective rare in the names of rare earth elements is due to the difficulty of processing ores and making them available for use rather than their low frequency in nature. Because, the frequency of some REEs in nature is higher than metals such as chromium, nickel, lead and copper.

Due to their usage areas, REEs are indispensable for modern material and energy technologies. Although the amount of use by weight in material production is low, rare earth elements are described as the vitamin and seed of the material due to the high-level mechanical, magnetic, electrical and optical properties they provide to the material. Prominent areas of use of rare earth elements are given in the chart below.

When the usage areas are evaluated, magnets and alloys stand out. The use of NTE stands out especially in the production of SmCo and NdFeB magnets. The specified magnets are used in electric motors and wind turbines. There is a greater need for NTEs, especially in new generation wind turbines.
